When playing jazz lines the basic ingredient that gives the line it’s unique sound is
how it is phrased. I am sure you heard the phrase, “It is not what you say, it is how
you say it.” In the music language we say, “It is not what you play, it is how you play
it.”
Each jazz phrases needs to take on shape. The shape of the phrase needs to contain
line direction and forward motion. In order for a jazz phrase to take on meaning
it needs to have substance and lead to a conclusion or resolution. The line needs
to aim for a destination. It must be a complete thought. Think of a phrase as a
musical sentence and a number of sentences as a musical paragraph. Each phrase
needs to be connected to each other. Much like how the English language is used
to tell a story, a musical solo using the music language to tell a musical story.
Jazz phrases are composed of basic tonality, phrase fragments and line direction.
All the jazz patterns in this book have been dissected and diagramed to help one
develop a basic understanding of the structure of a jazz phrase.
