These etudes are expected to help the instrumentalist
develop some basic technical skills on his or her instrument,
and also more important, to generate ideas that can
be used when improvising over a set of chord changes.
Emphasis has been made to give the etudes musicality
and melodic continuity. In order to do so, the etudes have
been composed primarily using certain musical devices
that have proven to be valuable both in music composition
and improvisation. The use of these devices tends to give
coherence and melodic continuity to ideas within an etude
or improvised solo. There are countless of these devices that
are used in composition and improvisation. If the reader
takes some time to analyze the etudes presented in this
book, he or she will find that there are a few of them that are
used over and over.
Many of these work well with Jamey’s Volume 54 “Maiden Voyage” play-a-long. All are very playable and highly recommended for private lessons.
“I think these etudes are very good. Ivan demonstrates the use of sequences and repetition in general, good jazz/bebop vocabulary, and use of space in setting off ideas. I think it will make a great addition to jazz books, especially reinforcing the play along books!” Dan Haerle
