Along with Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke was one of the first jazz musicians to become renowned for his improvised solos. His unique style comes out of an interesting mixture of musical influences, some still well-known and some almost forgotten. His improvisations were based on the harmonies of the wonderful popular songs of his time, many of which are now recognized today as standards. His use of vibrato, a clear and bell-like attack, accurate intonation and an overall "solid" style make his music a modern revelation to those who haven't heard him. Join jazz trumpet master Peter Ecklund in this exploration of Beiderbecke's unique style. He demonstrates each of these golden musical standards, then you step in and perform as soloist with the band!
